The sight of casino-goers pulling cash from their wallets or hunting for ATMs is changing.

A new payment system has debuted at a Nevada casino, allowing players to transfer gaming funds directly from their bank accounts using only their mobile phones.

Customers simply scan a QR code displayed on the slot machine with their phone and transfer the desired amount from their bank account. There is no need to install a dedicated casino app or obtain a membership card.

Casino payments are evolving beyond cash and tickets toward a model that directly connects personal mobile devices to financial accounts.

According to casino industry outlets GGRAsia and IAG, global gaming equipment provider Light & Wonder announced the world's first installation of its new cashless payment system, 'RapidPlay,' at the Crystal Bay Casino in Nevada.

This system has received approval for use in Nevada, with expansion to other regions contingent upon further regulatory approval.

The Casino ATM Has Entered the Slot Machine

The most significant feature of this new system is that customers no longer need to leave their seats when they run out of funds during a game.

Traditionally, slot machines require cash or tickets with cash value to start playing. If funds ran low, players often had to find an ATM or a casino cage to secure more money.

RapidPlay handles this process via mobile phone.

Scanning the QR code on the slot machine screen opens a payment page on the user's phone, allowing them to transfer funds from their bank account directly into the machine.

The core technology is 'Open Banking,' which securely connects banks with third-party financial services.

The casino describes this technology as similar to using an ATM directly at the slot machine. In reality, it is not withdrawing cash from an ATM, but electronically loading funds from a bank account into the gaming machine.

From QR Scan to Gameplay: A 9-Step Process

The usage process for RapidPlay, as revealed by Crystal Bay Casino, is relatively simple while maintaining necessary authentication for financial transactions.

Customers scan the QR code, perform text and email verification, link their bank account, and select the transfer amount to begin playing.

RapidPlay Usage Steps

  1. Scan the slot machine QR code and enter the transfer amount
  2. Enter mobile number and complete text verification
  3. Enter email address and complete verification
  4. Confirm personal information and agree to terms
  5. Select bank and complete online banking authentication
  6. Select checking or savings account
  7. Request transfer and process transaction
  8. Set a PIN for future visits (optional)
  9. Start playing with funds reflected on the slot machine

Once the initial setup is complete, returning customers can simply scan the QR code, enter their PIN, and select the amount for a faster top-up.

The casino states that the RapidPlay system does not store the customer's online banking ID or password, and all transaction data is encrypted.

Additionally, any remaining funds after the game are designed to be withdrawn as traditional TITO (Ticket-In, Ticket-Out) tickets.

Therefore, RapidPlay is a technology for digitizing the funding process, not a fully digitized system for all casino cash-in/cash-out operations.

Lake Tahoe Casino Hosts the First Launch

Crystal Bay Casino, chosen as the world's first site, is a small-to-medium-sized casino, distinct from the massive integrated resorts in Las Vegas.

Located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, a major resort destination in the Western US, it operates a casino, performance venue, and lodging/dining facilities.

According to official guides, it features over 180 gaming machines, 6 blackjack tables, 1 craps table, and 1 roulette wheel.

This system was installed through a collaboration between Light & Wonder and payment service provider Koin.

Muthu Palanichamy, Senior VP of Global Systems at Light & Wonder, described this as a major milestone in advancing casino payment technology.

Eric Roe, General Manager of Crystal Bay Casino, emphasized the significance of being the first to adopt new technology that enhances customer convenience.

Cashless Payments Are Here: 'Direct Bank Link Without Apps'

However, cashless slot machine payments are not a global first. Resorts World Las Vegas, which opened in June 2021, introduced a service allowing cashless betting using mobile apps and digital wallets.

That system required customers to load funds into a digital wallet for use across the resort. Interestingly, Resorts World Las Vegas recently announced it would phase out its existing cashless system by March 2026 for re-evaluation, proving that new tech adoption doesn't guarantee long-term success.

In contrast, RapidPlay focuses on connecting bank accounts directly to machines without needing a casino app or membership card.

Light & Wonder previously announced a partnership with open banking provider Trustly in April 2024, emphasizing the 'no-app' approach. However, the actual payment partner applied at Crystal Bay is Koin.

Will Cashless Change Casino Behavior?

The industry's interest goes beyond mere convenience. Reducing the need to leave the machine or handle cash increases game continuity. For operators, this improves efficiency.

Conversely, it raises challenges regarding gambling addiction. A player inserting $100 in cash feels the physical loss, but digital transfers can make it harder to track how much has been spent.

For those prone to 'chasing losses,' easy access to funds could lead to excessive play. This doesn't mean RapidPlay inherently increases addiction, but it highlights the need for risk verification.

Competitiveness in this tech should be measured not just by speed, but by how easily a player can stop and control their spending.

Anti-Money Laundering and Supervision

Cashless systems offer better audit trails than cash, but they introduce new risks, such as verifying the identity of the account holder versus the player.

The US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) mandates risk-based anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks for casinos. Suspicious transactions over $5,000 are subject to reporting, and 'structuring' (breaking transactions into smaller amounts) is also monitored.

While RapidPlay doesn't store banking passwords, this doesn't solve all AML or privacy concerns. Identity verification, data retention periods, and the scope of shared personal information remain critical.

Notably, the casino's claim of 'anonymous use without a membership card' should be interpreted carefully; it means you don't need to join a loyalty program, but it does not exempt the transaction from AML or KYC (Know Your Customer) requirements.

Responsible Gambling: The Key Variable

New payment tech also offers opportunities for protective features, such as setting daily or monthly deposit limits, or providing alerts when losses reach a certain threshold.

Features like self-exclusion or 'cooling-off' periods could also be integrated. While Nevada has technical standards for cashless systems, it is unclear from current announcements exactly how RapidPlay implements these specific safety features.

Implications for Korea's Casino Industry

This case offers significant insights for the Korean casino industry, including Kangwon Land, which currently relies on cash, chips, and TITO tickets.

As Korea's only casino open to locals, Kangwon Land faces complex regulations regarding gambling addiction and money laundering. Adopting overseas tech isn't a simple matter of 'copy and paste.'

However, understanding the global shift toward digital payments and how foreign regulators control and protect customer funds is essential.

The goals of convenient access and curbing excessive gambling often clash. For digital transformation to be meaningful, technology must not only keep players engaged but also help them stop at the right time.

This is why the debut of RapidPlay is so significant. As the industry evolves, success will be defined not by how easily money is deposited, but by how safely and responsibly it is managed.
